The Minister of Health and Health Infrastructure, accompanied by the Deputy Minister, received a delegation from the University of California, Davis (UCMI) and MCD Global Health on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, during a follow-up meeting focused on reviewing progress and coordinating the next phases of work planned under Equatorial Guinea’s Malaria Elimination Plan – Vision 2030.
The meeting builds on the working sessions held in Washington, D.C., in July, which addressed the planning of the various stages of this research initiative and its alignment with national priorities for malaria elimination.
During the meeting, the UCMI team reported on the initial work carried out in Annobón, where field surveys and the technical characterization of the local Anopheles mosquito population have already begun, as part of a research initiative to develop mosquitoes that do not transmit malaria. This information will help define the next stages of the scientific work planned for the island.
Another key point was the preparation of the necessary scientific infrastructure in Bioko and Annobón. In Bioko, following the technical visit to the Sampaka General Hospital, work is underway to plan the future laboratory and insectary. In Annobón, plans are also being made to develop the necessary infrastructure to support the next phases. In this regard, the Minister requested that a concrete timeline be established for the launch of these facilities.
In addition, a report was provided on the research protocol that has been drafted, which must be submitted to Equatorial Guinea’s National Ethics Committee as part of the established national procedures for moving forward to the next phases of the work.
The meeting allowed the Ministry of Health, UCMI, and MCD Global Health to align pending activities, responsibilities, and next steps, including the continuation of technical work in Annobón, training, infrastructure development, and awareness-raising and communication efforts that will progressively accompany the process.
These activities are being carried out within the framework of Equatorial Guinea’s Malaria Elimination Plan – Vision 2030, which integrates current interventions in prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and vector control with new lines of research aimed at contributing to the national goal of malaria elimination.
